How It Works
Word Counter analyzes your text in real-time right in your browser. No data is sent to our servers, ensuring your privacy.
Counting Methodology
- Words: Calculated by splitting the text by spaces, newlines, and tabs. Punctuation attached to words is ignored in the split, but standalone punctuation does not count as a word.
- Characters: The total number of keystrokes, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces.
- Characters (no spaces): The total character count excluding space characters (spaces, tabs, newlines).
- Sentences: Estimated by counting instances of ending punctuation marks (periods, exclamation points, and question marks) followed by a space or newline.
- Paragraphs: Counted by identifying blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines (newlines).
- Average Word Length: Calculated using the formula:
Total Characters (no spaces) ÷ Total Words.

- Reading Time: Based on an average adult silent reading speed of 250 words per minute (WPM). Formula:
Words ÷ 250. - Speaking Time: Based on an average presentation or speech rate of 130 words per minute (WPM). Formula:
